What Wandsworth Council asks of a heritage statement
From the council's Local Validation Checklist (July 2026), item 27 Heritage Statement (adopted July 2026).
- Wandsworth has 46 conservation areas, ranging from historic villages such as Battersea Square to large twentieth-century social housing such as the Alton Estates in Roehampton. (source, checked 25 October 2026)
- Item 27 of the July 2026 validation checklist requires every application affecting a heritage asset or its setting to include a Statement of Heritage Significance and Impact, as a separate document or within the design and access statement, and says it should be carried out by a specialist historic environment consultant. (source, checked 25 October 2026)
- Proposals should show regard to any relevant Conservation Area Appraisal, the Historic Environment Record should as a minimum be reviewed and referenced, and historical information discovered during the application must be submitted by the applicant to the Greater London Historic Environment Record. (source, checked 25 October 2026)
- The statement must explain the sources considered, the expertise consulted and the steps taken to avoid or minimise harm, and where a site may include archaeological interest a desk-based assessment and, where necessary, a field evaluation are required. (source, checked 25 October 2026)
What Wandsworth heritage statement drawings have to show
Wandsworth asks the statement to show its working. Ours lists the sources we read (the conservation area appraisal, the Historic Environment Record search, historic maps and the list entry where there is one), names who prepared it, and sets out the design changes made to reduce harm, such as a lower parapet or a recessed rear extension, with the drawing numbers that show them.
Because the council asks for historical information found during an application to be passed to the Greater London Historic Environment Record, anything new we turn up about your house, such as an original date or builder, goes into an appendix in a form that can be sent on. Where the site is in an archaeological priority area, we flag early that a desk-based assessment may be needed.
