What Greenwich Council asks of a householder planning application

From the council's Local Validation Requirements List 2025, plans and drawings (adopted 2025).

  • Every Greenwich drawing needs a title, a drawing number with revision, the print size, the scale at that print size (for example 1:50 at A3), and a scale bar of 10 metres marked each metre, or 5 metres for householder and minor applications. (source, checked 25 October 2026)
  • Plans marked "do not scale" or similar will be returned as unacceptable, because the council must be able to scale from all drawings. For householder applications and lawful development certificates, measurements such as depth, width and height are described as very helpful. (source, checked 25 October 2026)
  • Elevations at 1:50 or 1:100 must cover every elevation including blank ones (a householder can instead state they are unchanged), show the full elevation of a building (a flat in a converted house must show the whole building) and the positions of windows and doors on neighbouring buildings, without existing or proposed trees, hedges or fences. (source, checked 25 October 2026)
  • Floor plans must show north, the site boundary, neighbouring building outlines, walls to be demolished and all floors including those unchanged, and new residential accommodation must state the use and size of each room and the overall unit sizes. (source, checked 25 October 2026)
  • Sections must show the site and finished floor levels related to a fixed datum point off-site, foundations and eaves levels, and the proposal against existing site levels and adjoining buildings. Householder and minor applications may show existing and proposed on one drawing, but major ones need separate drawings. (source, checked 25 October 2026)

What Greenwich householder planning application drawings have to show

Greenwich is exact about how a drawing is labelled, so ours carry the title, number, revision, print size and the scale at that size, with a 5-metre scale bar for householder work. The depth, width and height of the extension are written on the drawing, which the council says is very helpful on householder applications and certificates, and the words do not scale are never used.

Elevations are drawn clean, with no trees or fences, and show the neighbours' windows and doors; where your flat is in a converted house we draw the whole building elevation, not just the flat. Sections are tied to an off-site datum with eaves and foundation levels, so the officer can check heights without a site visit.

Greenwich householder planning application questions

What scale bar does Greenwich want on planning drawings?
A scale bar of 10 metres highlighting each metre, with a 5 metre bar acceptable for householder and minor applications. Drawings also state the print size and the scale at that size, such as 1:50 at A3, and carry a title and drawing number with revision.
Can Greenwich return my drawings for saying do not scale?
Yes. Greenwich's list says plans marked do not scale or similar will be returned as unacceptable, because the council must be able to scale from all drawings. We state the scale and print size on every sheet and add measurements, which the council calls very helpful for householder work.
Do I have to draw every elevation for a Greenwich householder application?
Greenwich asks for all elevations including blank ones, but a householder application can instead include a statement confirming that the unchanged ones will remain so. Floor plans work the same way. Elevations must not show trees, hedges or fences, and must show neighbours' windows and doors.
