What Camden Council asks of a householder planning application

From the council's Camden's Local Area Requirements for Planning Applications 2025 (adopted current edition, read 25 October 2026).

  • Camden wants all plans at a minimum scale of 1:50, or 1:100 if the site is outside a conservation area and the building is not listed, annotated, and showing the proposed works against what is already there. (source, checked 25 October 2026)
  • Structures to be demolished should be cross-hatched in red on the existing and proposed plans, elevations, sections and roof plans, and sections must also show finished floor and site levels. (source, checked 25 October 2026)
  • Elevations must show the relationship to neighbouring buildings, including their relative heights, and every drawing must be clearly titled, carry a unique reference, a revision letter if updated, a scale bar and a north arrow on plans. (source, checked 25 October 2026)
  • For rear extensions and conservatories, plans, elevations and sections must show the boundary walls with adjoining properties and, where relevant, their relative levels. If the extension rises above the boundary wall, an elevation from the neighbouring side is required. (source, checked 25 October 2026)
  • For roof extensions, terraces and dormers, Camden asks for elevations of the whole property, existing and proposed sections through the roof where the works are, and the floor plans of the floors affected. Roof terraces also show the nearest windows of adjoining properties and the enclosure and privacy screens. (source, checked 25 October 2026)
  • For window replacement Camden asks for existing and proposed sections showing the relationship of the window frame to the reveal. (source, checked 25 October 2026)

What Camden householder planning application drawings have to show

In Camden most of our clients sit in a conservation area, so we draw at 1:50 as the local requirements ask rather than the 1:100 allowed elsewhere. Demolition is cross-hatched in red on every drawing, every sheet carries a unique number and a revision letter, and the elevations include the neighbours' heights so the officer can read the relationship.

For a rear extension we draw the boundary wall and, if your roof or flank wall rises above it, the extra elevation as seen from next door that Camden asks for. A dormer or roof terrace set comes with whole-property elevations, a section through the roof, the neighbours' nearest windows and the screen details. Replacement windows get a frame-to-reveal section.

Camden householder planning application questions

What scale does Camden want planning drawings at?
A minimum of 1:50, or 1:100 only if the site is outside a conservation area and the building is not listed. The Local Area Requirements apply this to floor plans, elevations, sections and roof plans. Since much of Camden is in a conservation area, we normally draw at 1:50 so the application is valid first time.
Does Camden need an elevation from the neighbour side for an extension?
If a conservatory or rear extension will project above the boundary wall, Camden requires an elevation from the neighbouring perspective. The plans, elevations and sections must also show the boundary walls with the adjoining properties and, where relevant, the relative levels of those properties.
How does Camden want demolition shown on drawings?
Structures to be demolished should be cross-hatched in red on the plans, elevations, sections and roof plans. Camden also wants the proposed works shown in relation to what is already there, and for sections to show finished floor and site levels, so we use the same hatch on all four drawing types.
