Heritage statement in Camden, from £565 fixed
Camden's 40 conservation areas cover about half the borough, and the council says an application to alter a property in one must include a heritage statement. It must describe the significance of what is affected and give clear and convincing justification for any harm. We write it from your area's appraisal.
Householder application fee, paid to your council at submission.
Plus the Planning Portal's own charge if the application goes through the Portal: up to £149 including VAT, depending on the application type, and some types have none (source).

What Camden Council asks of a heritage statement
From the council's Conservation areas (council guidance page) (adopted current page, read 25 October 2026).
- Camden has 40 conservation areas, which cover about half of the borough, and each has a Conservation Area Appraisal and Management Strategy describing its character and appearance. (source, checked 25 October 2026)
- For alterations to a property in a conservation area the council says you must include a heritage statement, describing the significance of the heritage assets affected and the contribution of their setting, with clear and convincing justification for any harm. (source, checked 25 October 2026)
- The council consults Camden's Conservation Area Advisory Committees, made up of residents, local businesses and local historical, civic and amenity groups, on applications that may affect the character or appearance of a conservation area. (source, checked 25 October 2026)
- Six weeks of notice must be given to the council before work to any tree in a conservation area with a trunk diameter of more than 75mm at 1.5 metres above the ground. (source, checked 25 October 2026)
What Camden heritage statement drawings have to show
In Camden the appraisal does much of the work. We read the Conservation Area Appraisal and Management Strategy for your area, quote the features it identifies in your street, and show how the proposal keeps or repairs them. The statement then sets out why any change that the appraisal would count as harm is justified, because the council's page asks for clear and convincing reasons.
Because the local Conservation Area Advisory Committee will be consulted, the statement is written for a lay reader who knows the street well: plain descriptions, photographs and references to the drawing numbers. Where the scheme needs a tree to be pruned or removed, the statement notes the six-week notice so the tree work does not hold up the build.
